When can I start piano lessons?
I teach ages 0 through adults!
Sound Beginnings is a small group class created specifically for 0–4 year olds that involves singing, instrument play, movement to music, classical music listening, and kindergarten readiness skills.
Let's Play Music is a small group class and keyboard curriculum created specifically for 4–6 year olds that focuses on in tune singing, music reading, keyboard skills, trained classical music listening, and movement.
For private lessons, My First Piano Adventures is a curriculum for 5–6 year old beginners with cheerful pictures and a music CD of all the songs to listen to and play along with. Piano Adventures was created with 7–9 year old beginners in mind and has eight graded levels that progress to early advanced music. Students also use Piano Marvel, which combines with any curriculum.
What is Piano Marvel?
Piano Marvel is online technology using a tablet or desktop that is connected to a keyboard. Piano Marvel grades your performances; showing you where you make mistakes and allows you to play songs over and over until you win a bronze, silver or gold trophy according to your performance. Piano Marvel tracks your progress by adding those trophies to your personalized trophy case. It also features over 3,000 songs and exercises designed to challenge everyone from young beginners to seasoned professionals.
Students who practice regularly with Piano Marvel progress 4 to 8 times faster than only using traditional teacher-led lessons. Using Piano Marvel allows teachers more time to work on musicality and less time on the mechanics of playing the piano.

When can I start flute lessons?
Typically, I recommend waiting until about age 8 or 9 to begin flute lessons. But there are special flutes made for 6–7 year olds if you are really keen! The Blocki Flute Method starts at ground zero and is fantastic for young beginners! Visit www.blockiflute.com
What's the first step?
Schedule an introductory lesson. We can meet in person for 30 minutes and I will evaluate a student’s skill level, review my policies, and recommend books — all for only $15!
What do I bring to my lessons?
What books will I be using?
For flute students: I love the Blocki flute method by Kathy Blocki. She begins with head joint exercises to help students learn how to create their embouchure (lip and mouth position), then progresses through scales, graded pieces, and written theory exercises. I suggest the Trevor Wye books and other repertoire as appropriate for late intermediate and early advanced students.
For piano students: I love the Piano Adventures series by Faber. Their unique curriculum provides a solid foundation in music reading, written and aural theory, composition and improvisation, and sight-reading skills. I use other methods for the wee ones and adults. Here’s a list:
0–4 years: Soung Beginnings
4–6 years: Let's Play Music
5–6 years: My First Piano Adventures method
7 years+: Piano Adventures method, Piano Pronto method, Alfred Premier Piano Course
10 years+: Premier Piano Express, Piano Pronto method, and repertoire as appropriate
Adults: Adult Piano Adventures method, Piano Pronto method, and repertoire as appropriate
